Portrait Commissions
About
For portrait commissions I use top quality linen and oil paints that are designed to last for generation after generation, making sure your painting becomes an enduring legacy. The finishing varnish is UV proof, so you may hang your painting in any room without fear of color changing over time. The two unfinished paintings included on this page are the results of a single 3 hour sitting.
Below is an overview of how commissions work
Step 1: Style, Size, Price, Scheduling
Before the painting session, we have a call to discuss the purpose of the portrait, your likes/dislikes, and any personalization. Based on this information we choose a size together and schedule the sitting session
Style & Personalization
You may choose an impressionistic, painterly style or a more realistic, photographic style for the painting
No limit on clothing choice
You may request particular color schemes
Personal items are welcome for inclusion
Unusual requests are welcome : )
Pricing
The $400 cost for this item will go towards your final cost. Portraits start at $400 and go up depending on complexity and size
Size is determined by what you would like, and whether the subject is head and shoulders, half-figure, three-quarter figure, or full figure
Portraits with multiple people or intricate backgrounds/objects increase complexity
If the artist needs to travel to a client location for the portrait, additional costs will cover transportation and the additional setup/breakdown time
Framing costs are additional, and the artist will happily assist the client in choosing the most suitable frame for the portrait (Typically $100 - $600)
Pricing Examples
A 20”x24” full figure double portrait with simple background, no frame: $800 (See picture with red background)
A 16”x20” three-quarter figure with brick background, no frame: $600
A 12”x16” half figure portrait with simple background, no frame: $400
Step 2: Portrait Sitting
Depending on how much time you have available and personal preference, we can work solely from life or from a combination of life and photographs
Sitting options
4 hour live painting session, painting completed with photograph
16-24 hour painting session, painting completed solely from life
With either, the standard rythm would be sitting for 20 minutes at a time with 5 minute breaks in between. We can shorten or lengthen sitting/breaking depending on your preferences. For a painting done solely from life, it would be 3-4 hour blocks spread out over a few weeks. For example, meeting every Sunday evening at 4PM for a 4 hour session until the painting is completed.
The two unfinished paintings included on this page are the results of a single 3 hour sitting. The goal for the initial sitting is capture color and major proportions accurately, also to give you an early preview of how the painting will look.
Step 3: Review & Delivery Estimation
Prior to finalization, you will get the opportunity to review the portrait. I want you to be happy with your portrait, if there is anything major that you absolutely can’t live with, we may be able to revise. Otherwise this will be the time to discuss framing options and delivery timelines. If you live within 2 hours of Boston, MA, your painting may be hand delivered to you.
Delivery Timeline
Please expect the painting to be delivered to you in 2-4 months from when the painting begins
Depending on the painting itself, dry times vary greatly. Typically the painting needs at least one month to dry out enough to be varnished. Impressionist paintings with heavy texture will take longer to dry
If you go with custom framing, that may add time as well
